This past Saturday Trevor and I ran in the Beach to Bay Marathon relay. Okay, fine i'll write it a little larger... it was a relay marathon! We had two teams and each team had 6 people running 6 different legs. We ran with the Woolsey family and friends. Trevor and I were on different teams so that we could the same leg together. We were assigned to leg 4, which happens to be the longest leg (how did I get signed up for that?) at 4.69 miles. The longest I had ever run before this was a 5k, so this wasn't too much further.
My racing career started back in the first grade. I ran in our school's fun run and I was the only girl from first grade running. So it was just me and the boys and I was definitely wearing a little denim skirt! I remember my dad telling me to pretend like I was running away from a dog (I was terrified of dogs when I was little). So I did, I think I sprinted the whole thing and honestly remember picturing a dog chasing me. I guess it worked because I got first place! I wish I had the picture to put on here of me standing there with my first place trophy in my denim skirt and pink ballet t-shirt!
Well sadly my running career didn't really take off after that win. I don't think I ran in another race until college when I ran in the Glow 5Ks a couple of times. So needless to say, I wasn't in the best of shape to run this past weekend!
I really enjoyed our leg. We ran through the Naval Base and I had never been on a base before so it was fun to see it. The most miserable portion of the race was waiting for the baton handoff to start running. We didn't really know how long it would take us to park and get to the start of our leg so we left early and got there with around 45 minutes to spare. While we were waiting the bottom of the sky fell out and it started pouring. So we were just standing there shivering, drenched head to toe, with no shelter from the storm! About the same time that our teammates came through with the batons the rains slowed down to a drizzle. The rest of our run it was still relatively cool with a light rain which turned out to be pretty good conditions. I didn't even feel like I like I was breaking a sweat! Trevor was sweet and stayed with me at my pace, which is a lot slower than his! I'm pretty sure he could have been walking next to me the whole time and kept up, but he would get a little bit ahead and then jog in place while I caught up. My goal was to run the whole time and I did it!
After our run we headed to the finish leg to cheer on Sarah and Bill who were the 6th leg runners from our teams. We got our medals, took some pictures, and ate some pizza, and shared our stories of all the crazy weather we had. Trevor and I had a blast and are so glad we did it. The pictures we took don't do the race justice because by the time everyone was finished the sky had cleared up and it had become a typical sunny, hot day in the middle of May in Corpus!
