Labor Day Weekend

We just had one of the best labor day weekends ever.  I don't really remember any labor day weekends of the past... maybe thats because at A&M we had class on labor day so I've never really had three day weekend to celebrate.  But this labor day weekend made me want to start a new tradition of going to the ranch in Hempstead for every labor day weekend.

Trevor, Ruby and I headed to Hempstead once he got off work on Friday and got there after dark.  Ruby ran off all the energy she was storing up on the almost 4 hour car ride while Trev and I unloaded the car and got settled in the house.  The next morning Ruby woke Trevor up early anxious to go see if the birds were flying.  They took a long walk around the ranch scoping out the dove scene while I slept in a little.  Trevor's parents got there sometime in the late morning and spent the day with us hanging out, doing a few chores and playing around with their new toy.

Trevor always tells me stories of what they used to do as kids out at the ranch.  One of the things that he always tells me about is how they used to throw grasshoppers in the spider webs out there and watch the spiders attack the grasshoppers.  Well there were tons of grasshoppers out there this weekend and a couple of huge spiders so we decided to act like 10 year olds again.  We were all entertained for a good 10 minutes by this crazy spider.

He was huge!! Its hard to tell from a picture how big he was, but trust me... he was huge!  We gave him a couple of regular sized grasshoppers and they were cake for him, so we found a giant grasshopper to give him a little more substance.  We threw him in there and the spider immediately attacked him, wrapping in up in a web.

But the grasshopper got bold and started fighting back! He broke a leg free from the web and it looked like he might be able to escape.

However, the spider still had some fight in him too.  They went back and forth a couple times, wrapping and breaking free.  Finally, the spider had enough and it looked like he was bitting the grasshopper, paralyzing him.  Once the spider had the grasshopper secure in the web he had to take a little breather.

It was a crazy site to see.  Everyone said that in all their years of throwing grasshoppers in spider webs they had never see the grasshopper fight back.

Ruby had fun chasing cows around, barking at them and trying her hardest to get them to chase her around and play with her.

Then she got hot and had to take a dip in the pool.

In the evening we went out for a hunt, and to see if our bird dog had it in her.

Tracking down her first bird.

Posing for a picture.  "Mom, look what I found! Can I play with it?"

"Can I have that Dad?"

She did good on the first bird, but then learned her lesson that if she gives it to dad she doesn't get it back.  So on the second bird she hogged it all to herself and took the the three of us on a chase to get it back from her!  The good news is she she has a soft mouth and didn't do any damage to the bird :)  She still needs a little work in the hunting department! She got a little ADD and took a dip in the pond while the boys were still hunting.

After the hunt we headed back to the house to grill some steaks for dinner.  While we were eating we realized we hadn't seen Ruby in a little while.  I looked for her and found that she had put herself to bed in her kennel in our room. (Something she never does!)  She was one pooped pup.

Trevor's brother, Logan, and his girlfriend, Sarah, came out to the ranch on Sunday and after hearing our stories of the spider fight the day before they wanted to see for themselves.  I looked out in the field and it looked like we had a lot of 10 year olds out there hunting for grasshoppers.

Sadly, the grasshoppers didn't bring it like they had the day before.
Kara and Adam showed up shortly after Logan and Sarah just in time for some lunch from Lewis'.  We all ate lunch by the pool and chatted for a while.

A couple hours later Trevor's sister, Bethany, and her boyfriend, Justin, showed up to play for the day.  The boys set up the volleyball court and we played a couple games of volleyball.  We played Prewetts vs. Non-Prewetts or the In-laws vs. the outlaws.  The Prewetts dominated the first two games (and by Prewetts I mean the one that were born into the Prewett family, b/c I think I only touched the ball 5 times and they usually went out when I did :))  But then the outlaws (Adam, Kara, Sarah, and Justin) came back for the win in the third game.  After that we all quickly jumped in the pool to cool off.  Just before dark we decided to try our luck fishing before we headed to dinner.  The fish were biting so we stuck around for a while.

And the lighting was so good out there we had a little photo session too.

Then we cleaned up a little and headed to dinner at Las Fuentes... best margaritas in town!  We met up with Mal and Rob there and then had to say goodbye to Bethany and Justin and Trevors parents after dinner as they were all going back home for the night.  The eight of us headed back to the ranch to end the night with some poolside catch phase in which the girls dominated.

We had planned to leave somewhat early in the day on Monday to get back for Trevors softball game in Corpus, but we got a call letting us know that the game had been canceled because of rain so we decided to stick around for a while.  Somehow we started what we thought would be a quick little game of croquet, but it quickly became an epic game of croquet.  The rain clouds started rolling in and we decided to stick it out and not let the rain stop us.

The rains stopped and we kept on playing.  Pretty sure this was the most strategic, competitive, longest game of croquet i've ever played in my life.

Once again we played in-laws vs. outlaws and the in-laws just barely pulled off the w after compromising the rules just so the game would actually end!  After the game we pulled ourselves together and loaded up our cars, cleaned the place up, and headed home.  It was such a great weekend filled with family and friends!
